Consistency of Design/Usability - Currently, the average connection speed is approximately 5Kbps (kilobytes per second). Thus, a 40 Kb web page will take approximately eight seconds to download. This just fits within the so-called 'eight second rule', which is considered the recommended loading time for web pages. That is, it has been suggested that users will tolerate no more than around eight seconds for a web page to download. I try to keep pages at 15Kb or under, ensuring quick load times. And so your visitors won't become lost on your website and have to wonder if they're still on the same website at all, your design will maintain a consistent look throughout your web site, including an easy to use and logical navigational system.

Proofread Text - Misspellings and incorrect grammar are both unprofessional and annoying. They cause your site to look as though someone rushed it into production or make you look like you don't care enough to do the job right. This isn't going to happen to you!

Contact and Copyright Information - This makes it easy for people to contact you, no matter what page they may be on. It also establishes and clearly states ownership of your website content.

I do not have any control on how the search engines rank you or include you in their directory. Each search engine is different. The requirements for the search engine optimization field change very often and it is a full time job to figure out what the search engines latest criteria is.

WARNING If you have ever been offered "Guaranteed search engine placement for $xx per month" then you are almost certainly being ripped off. The scam is to list all the search engines that you want to be in the top ten results for (like Google, MSN, Yahoo, AltaVista etc.) and then list a few search engines you haven't heard of. When the guaranteed results are investigated - you find that you are only in the top ten results of the search engines that you haven't heard of - and on further investigation you find that the company that sold you the service runs these sites. It is a popular and profitable scam. Don't be taken in. Demand to see results they have had for real people and take up references from them. Always remember that 90% of search engine optimization is offsite, and takes time. If they are only charging a few dollars per month it simply isn't possible to get you to the top of Google for that kind of money. Large corporations have dedicated teams of people working full time to get them to the top of Google, and it still isn't guaranteed!
